For curious grown-ups: a little more history

Persian belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. Farsi, Dari, and Tajik share roots, with regional differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and writing traditions.

Persian has used several writing systems over time. Iranian Persian uses a script adapted from Arabic; Tajik is generally written in Cyrillic. “New Persian” includes older literature as well as the language spoken today.
